2/40 Coal Tax Post at west end - of The Hythe on traffic island

Coal and wine tax post circa 1861 made by Henry Grissell. Metal, circa 4 feet high. Four legged plinth with chamfered pier above. Moulded capital band and pyramidal top. City of London shield on front. Lettering on pier reads 24 & 25 VICT/CAP42. Makers name on rear. Coal and wine tax post indicating the boun- dary at which duty was payable, that on coal dating back to the 1660s.
