4/23 The Whitehouse and 16.5.53 farm buildings to East, West and South

Farmhouse and farm buildings. Early to mid C18 with north facade of c1770. Red brick with ashlar dressings, formerly limewashed, clay tile roofs with raised and coped verges; brick stacks. Palladian facade to house and farm buildings, ranged around a courtyard. Facade: 2 storeys; 3 bay central block with moulded cornice and pediment formerly surmounted by ball ornaments, and slightly lower single bay outer wings with open pediments, linked by low Tuscan colonades (that to left now blocked); blind round headed arch in centre of both wings and central block flanked by pilasters (those of main block with banded rustication) and linked by a moulded cornice extending along the top of the colonades. Farmhouse: 4 bays; all windows blocked; concealed by central block of facade. Farmbuildings: brick granary to west of farm yard. Timber framed and brick barns to east of farmyard. Sited on the edge of Chillington Park and designed as an eyecatcher.
