SE 24 NE WEETON CASTLEY ROAD SE 2677 4692 (north end) 5/99 Sign post at junction with Bradford to Harrogate Road

Sign post. 1743. Gritstone. Approximately 1.20 metres high, square section. Inscriptions: east face - 'The Road To (Br)adford ( ) Miles. 1743' with hand pointing south above. North face - 'The Road To Otley ( ) Miles' with hand above pointing to west, 'The Road to Knaresborough ( ) Miles' with hand pointing east. The post dates from the time when the ford over the River Wharfe at Castley carried the main traffic to Bradford from Harrogate.

It was probably defaced when the ford went out of use, late C19.
