NZ 2463 NE NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE WESTGATE ROAD (south side) 23/593 Robert Stephenson Memorial 12.11.65 GV II* Statue. 1862 by J.G. Lough, Sandstone and bronze. Wide square step to heavily- rusticated plinth and tapered octagonal pedestal supporting seated heroic figure of Robert Stephenson. Corner projections support 4 over-life size figures representing spheres if Stephenson's activity: miner, locomotive engineer, blacksmith and bridge builder.
