Board school. c1900. Brick with limestone dressings, gable stacks and triple Roman tiled cross-gabled and hipped roof. Central hall with flanking classroom blocks. Queen Anne style.
Single storey. The hall has tall end gables with central stacks with segmental pediments, curved brackets each side, and obelisk finials at the eaves with inverted semicircular arches divided by short columns; the ridge has a large hipped lantern with modillion cornice and 4 large windows each side with glazing bars, with the base of an hexagonal cupola. The 18-window NE elevation has full-width sill and impost bands, with 2 gables at each end with good openwork square pinnacles, and finials each side on rolled bases. Between are 2 lower hipped gables, and tall, thin pyramidal vents to the ridge behind. Each gable has a central semicircular-arched window with alternate brick and stone voussoirs, and narrow flanking windows with split keys, 12/12-pane central and 6/6-pane flanking sashes in flush frames. Semicircular-arched basement windows. The opposite elevation has 5 similar gables. The hall gables have a carved top section with a winged cupid and swag above a keyed oculus, with 2 large semicircular-arched windows with alternate brick and stone voussoirs. Tall thin pyramid vents to ridge behind the hall. The Maxse Road end has single-storey parapeted block below the end gable with an ashlar panel, and right-hand doorway with Gibbs blocks and cartouche key. Left-hand parapeted 3-window block. Rainwater hoppers inscribed BSB. INTERIOR not inspected. The typical later plan form of the Bristol School Board, with good decorative stone detailing. A fine example, built possibly to the designs of either H Dare Bryan or F Bligh Bond.
