House and pair of attached houses, now one public house. c1710, altered late C18/early C19, converted late C20, exterior joinery dating from then. Roughcast, render and brick, clinker plinth, brick right-hand lateral stack and pantile hipped roof. 3 double-depth plan units linked into one. 3 storeys and attic; 3-window range. The early C18 elevation facing the bottom of Host Street is symmetrical with a clinker plinth below the ground-floor cills, a public house front to the right-hand corner and return, and overhanging timber eaves cornice. A central doorway has a timber pediment on moulded brackets with recessed bed mould and a door with 4 raised panels. Raised surrounds to 6/6-pane ground-floor, 9/9-pane first-floor and 6/9-pane second-floor sashes, in exposed frames; 2 hipped dormers. Paired 8/8-pane sashes to the public house beneath a cornice; the 1-window right-hand return has paired 12/12-pane public house front sashes, and windows above as the front. 2 right-hand sections stepped up Christmas Steps have C20 public house glazing to the ground floors; the middle one has left-of-centre hoist doors above with double doors, and extends up abutting the brick stack; the right-hand section has ashlar lintels to first-floor plate-glass and second-floor 3/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR: chamfered ceiling beams, ground-floor fireplace, and C20 public house interior. Nos 1-7 Christmas Steps were listed on 4.3.1977.
