Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

KEMPSEY CP - SO 84 NE 7/10 The Nash 11.8.52 - II House. Circa 1600 with probable earlier remains. Altered 1831 and early C20. Brick with stone dressings and tile roof. Two storeys with attics.

The south front is a balanced composition with two bays to each side of a central two-storey porch. Each bay has a crow-stepped gable. The present mullioned and transomed windows replace mullioned windows of 1831 shown in a photograph in VCH. They are of three lights with transom except for those on the ground floor of the middle bays and the first floor of the right- hand bay, which are of four lights. The attic is lit by 3-light mullioned windows. The porch has a cross-window on the first floor, a Tudor-arched doorway, and a gable with coping and finials. Chimneys have diagonal shafts.

Interior: not accessible at time of survey (October 1986). Said to contain remains of timber-framing. The dinining room and oak bedroom are said to have oak panelling and plaster ceilings of c1600, with vine, rose, ash, oak and thistle in ogee patterns. Oak bedroom said to have large painted mantel of figures and strapwork dated 1598. Main stair said to be early C18, with slim twisted and columnar balusters and carved tread-ends. (BoE, p 203; VCH, Vol 3, p 430).
