GV II

House, at one time borough council offices. Early C19. Timber-framed and rendered with slate hipped roof with lead flat, and belvedere with pyramid slate roof and small-pane windows. Square plan with projecting basement forming platform, with wide curving flight of stone steps leading up from side to ground-floor level EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement platform; 3-window range. Thin pilasters at corners. 2nd floor has sash windows, the outer 2 with 2 vertical glazing bars and the centre with a central vertical bar and margin glazing. The 1st floor has 3 deeper sash windows, the outer with 9 panes and central with 6 panes and margin glazing. Ground floor has central porch with moulded cornice and fluted Grecian Doric columns; sides of porch are infilled with margin-glazed sash windows with yellow glass; 2 sash windows, now boarded up. The platform over projecting basement has elaborate cast-iron railings and is paved with exceptionally large stone (slate?) slabs. The front face of basement has a central entrance with paired pilasters and moulded cornice; either side are 2 wide segmental-headed window openings and 2 doors, the latter with Doric pilasters and cornices. Windows on basement and ground floor have rendered expressed arches with keystones. At time of survey the lower window and doors were boarded up. The south-east flank has Gault brick stack and later oriel on 1st floor. North-west flank has truncated stack and fire escape staircase. Porch at ground-floor level on rear. INTERIOR: good quality softwood timber-frame with central hall and staircase. Many internal fittings survive including contemporary staircase, doors and architraves.
