GV II

Unequal pair of villas in planned group of villas. Mid-late C19. Stucco with stucco detail; steep asbestos slate roofs behind parapets with moulded entablature and with 2 coped front gables to cross wings, right of centre and on the right; stuccoed lateral stacks surmounted by diagonally-set shafts.

Simple Tudor Gothic style. Overall L-shaped irregular double-depth plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys (No.20, left) and 2 storeys over basement; articulated 5-bay front with 1 window to 1st floor of each bay and to 2nd floor of No.20 (2 bays). No.20 has slightly-projecting bay on the left with pilastered canted bay window with moulded entablature to ground floor; narrow entrance bay with 4-centred arched doorway of 2 orders and panelled door, and projecting cross wing on the right, flush with the front of No.21 and with window to each floor of its left-hand return. Late C19 or C20 horned sashes without glazing bars to left-hand bays of No.20; possibly original 2-light transomed mullioned windows with 4-centred arched top lights to right-hand bay of No.20 and to right-hand bay of No.21. The narrow entrance bay of No.21 has parapet over single-light 1st-floor window and 4-centred arched doorway with panelled and partly-glazed door set back. All the openings have square hoodmoulds and there is a string above the 1st-floor windows. INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: rubble side garden walls linked to low front wall with square gate-piers with squat pyramidal caps.

Part of a good group of mid C19 villas. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 669).
