SX 79 SW DREWSTEIGNTON HILLMORAY, Drewsteignton

5/117 Charisma Cottage

GV II

Cottage. Probably early C19 although parts may be earlier. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.

Plan: double depth house facing south. There is a front and back room either side of a staggered through passage and the staircase is in the rear part. The front rooms are wider than the rear ones. The rear right room is unheated. The rest are heated by gable-end stacks. The largest room, the main room, is front right. 2 storeys.

Exterior: regular but not symmetrical 3-window range of C20 casements with glazing bars. The front doorway is left of centre and now contain a C20 gabled door behind a contemporary gabled and thatch-roofed porch. Roof is half-hipped to right and gable-ended to left rising above the adjoining properties.

Interior: has plain carpentry detail and C19 joinery detail. The ground floor front left fireplace looks earlier than C19; it is a large fireplace built of granite with a neatly soffit-chamfered oak lintel.

Charisma Cottage is one of an attractive group of listed buildings in the centre of Drewsteignton village.
