DARTINGTON SX76SE WEEK 1/173 Cob Cottage 9.2.61
GV II
Pair of cottages. Early C17. Stone rubble and cob with rendered front and right-hand gable end wall. Thatched roof with gabled ends. Gable end stacks; left-hand with set-offs and slate weatherings, right-hand projects from gable end and is truncated.
Plan: Pair of adjoining cottages: the left-hand cottage was of 2 room plan, the left room heated and originally with central entrance passage, its partition removed and now one room; and with circa C18 wing at rear, probably originally an outbuilding. The left-hand cottage is one room plan with a gable end fireplace to right, and the passage to left is now a small room. The 2 cottages have been converted into one house.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window range. 2 and 3-light casements; first floor left and first floor centre are C17 casements, ogee- moulded inside and with leaded panes; all the ground floor windows are late C18 or early C19 casements; first floor right C20 casement in old frame.
The doorways, both with slate canopies; left-hand with plank door and outer half door; right-hand doorway converted to window but retaining outer half door; steps from road to both doorways.
The wing at rear was probably originally an outbuilding and has hipped thatched roof. Low-pitched single storey lean-to on left gable end.
Interior: solid cob wall rising into roof between the 2 cottages. Small cantling chamfered ceiling beams closely spaced. Roof: halved collars lapped to the principals with morticed apexes. Lower left cottage has fireplace in gable end wall with chamfered timber lintel with hollow step stops. The fireplace above has chamfered and stopped lintel on chamfered and stopped wooden corbel on right side only.
