GV II

Small house, converted into 3 cottages and reunited into one house. Circa early C17 mid C17 rear wing and C18 and C20 extension. Local limestone rubble. Steeply pitched slate roof with gabled end stone rubble chimney stacks; Large projecting stack at loft gable end with slate weatherings and stack at right gable end with set-off and rebuilt red brick shaft; another projecting stone stack at gable end of rear wing with set off and slate cap.

Plan: Originally a 2-room plan house with a gable end stacks; the left hand stack had a smoking chamber and possibly an oven and therefore this room was the kitchen and the right hand room the parlour before a kitchen wing was added in circa mid C17 to the rear of the right hand room (parlour); this kitchen wing has 1-room plan with a gable end fireplace with an oven. Probably in the late C18 the house was converted into 3 one- room plan cottages; the 2 cottages in the original front range shared a central entrance lobby at the front which was probably in the partition of the original entrance; the entrance to the cottage in the rear wing is at the side. Parallel with the entrance to the cottage in the rear wing is at the side. Parallel with the rear wing and in the angle with the main range there is a service room for the rear cottage; this room and the long single storey outbuilding at the left end of the main range were probably added in late C18 when the house was divided. In C20 the cottages were reunited into one house and the accommodation was extended into the outbuilding at the left end; but recently the rear wing has been used for separate accommodation.

Exterior: 2 storeys. 2 window range. Ground floor C20 3-light casements with glazing bars. First floor C20 aluminium casements have central porch with stone rubble side walls and lean-to slate roof originally open-fronted but has now glazed front; inside the porch niches the side walls are probably blocked windows. Pair of doorways with C19 plank doors at splayed angle forming a lobby at back of the porch. Low single storey wing to left with scantle slate roof aluminium windows and C20 door.

At rear the wing has large external stack on gable end and various c20 casements and plank door on side with C20 glazed porch. Parallel to the rear wing in the angle with the main range there is a narrow gable-ended storey C20 extension.

Interior: the original house has plank and muntin partition between the two ground storey rooms, only exposed on the left side which has chamfered mortices with worn stops at low level. Plastered partition above on first floor coincides with a truss. chamfered cross-beams; right hand room with straight cut stops and half beam on right end wall; the left end has a timber lintel with narrow chamfers with run-out stops and stone rubble jambs. The fireplace in the right end has been blocked with small C20 fireplace with blocked oven, chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stops and stone rubble jambs; the fireplace above has chamfered timber lintel on wooden corbels.

Roof: Roof-space not accessible but the original structure appears to have survived; the short curved feet of the 5 principal rafters are visible in the first floor rooms of the original house and the purlins seem to be threaded. In the first floor room of the rear wing the feet of the principal rafters are just visible.
