TM 04 95 ATTLEBOROUGH CHURCH STREET (south side) 11/2 The Griffin Hotel 21.7.51 II

Hotel. Mid C17 and C18. Timber framed, brick and rendered with pantiled roofs in T plan. 2 storeyed facade forms cross wing. Carriage entrance to right, door left of centre and 3 renewed cross casements to ground floor.

Applied timbering to first floor interrupted by 3 mullioned casements. All windows with leaded lights. Bell based gabled roof above decorated bargeboards and timber eaves cornice. Rear range 2 storeyed with dormer attic descending in 4 ranges. Brick plinth and flat brick string course at first floor.

Miscellaneous late C19 sash windows and 2 flat topped dormers C20. Interior of restaurant with early C18 brick fireplace and timber framing exposed studs with straight bracing. Main bar similar although timbers altered.

Sitting room over carriage arch has late C17 panelling utilising masons mitre construction. Dog leg staircase retains ball turned balusters and square moulded handrail with plain square newel posts.
