Bartholomew 30.5.60 - I

Parish church. Mainly C15. Flint with ashlar dressings and rendered south aisle. Modern concrete tiled roofs. West tower, aisled nave of 5 bays with north porch and chancel with crypt. C15 west tower. Diagonal buttresses with blind arcading and flushwork plinth. Moulded west door with filletted rolls and 2 pairs of very thin shafts. Traceried spandrels and large 4-light Perpendicular window above. Rectangular traceried sound holes. Tall 2-light bell openings with median transoms. Decorative crenellated parapet with angle pinnacles. Canted stair turret to south.

2-light Perpendicular aisle windows with embattled transoms. Similar 3- light eastern aisle windows. 10 late Perpendicular square-headed 2-light clearstorey windows beneath brick and flint relieving arches. 4 3-light side chancel windows to north in Decorated style,with pairs of mouchettes and central daggers,and to south in Perpendicular style. Fine 5-light east window subdivided into 2, one and 2 lights. Embattled transoms and mouchette and dagger motifs. Chancel gable rebuilt with brick tumbling-in. INTERIOR.

Octagonal nave piers, with tall bases, moulded capitals and arches of 2 plain chamfered orders. Very tall tower arch with 2 pairs of half shafts and wide, shallow mouldings. Wave moulded 4-centred chancel arch on half shafts.

Piscina in south aisle. Very fine Decorated and Perpendicular triple sedilia-cum-piscina with cusped and crocketted ogee arches with fleurons on quatrefoil supports yet panel traceried spandrels with an embattled top course. Finely carved label stops. Steps to crypt in north wall with carved head label stops to entrance which has original door with decorative ironwork.

Small unvaulted crypt with 3 narrow splayed windows and a 4th blocked open- ing to south with rebate and hinge mortices in wooden frame for former cup- board doors. Restored C15 chancel screen. C15 aisle. roofs with roll-moulded wall plates, principal rafters and butt purlins. Nave roof retains some sections of original moulded wall plate. Original wall posts, perhaps,in chancel with arch bracing and truncated ties. Impressive 3-decker pulpit of C15, C17 and C18 dates. Lower part C15 with poppy head pew ends, middle storey C17 with panelling and continuous bracketted lectern shelf. C15 top storey - hexagonal with blind traceried panels and C17 carved lectern shelf with guilloche moulding on carved brackets. Original hexagonal stem and an C18 pine tester with raised and fielded panels and a scrolled iron supporting bar. Fine C15 pews with carved poppy heads and animal arm rests.

Linenfold panelling to front pew south probably C16. Some pierced traceried backs of differing designs. Book cupboard in front pew north. Post-medieval box pews in positions of former aisle altars with carved lunette frieze to north and to south, dated 1590, a fluted frieze and door with cock's head hinges. Fragments of wall painting include 2 Saint Christophers and a consecration cross.
