Includes: Silwood Park BUCKHURST ROAD Blacknest. Large country house and stable block, now a college. 1876-8 by Alfred Waterhouse. Red brick in English bond with stone dressings and tiled roofs with fishscale tiles every 3rd course; crested ridge tiles. Stables of red brick in English bond with stone dressings. Gothic style. Large rectangular plan with conservatory projecting on south-west; former stable block adjoining on north-east. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics and basement. Several large chimneys with offset heads and clay pots. Projecting plinth with stone band above, moulded string above first floor window heads, brick corbelled eaves. Entrance (north-west) front: irregular. Main features comprise 4, one-bay gables of different heights. To the right of centre a tall tower in 3 stages over the enclosed entrance porch; tower has pyramidal roof topped with large open lantern. The top stage has stone blank arcading with cusped heads and circular colonnettes, and brick corbelled eaves. Each stage is divided with a moulded stone string. The entrance porch has a lean-to roof, engaged columns of 2 orders and leaf capitals. It is approached by 5 stone steps.
On the right is a 5-bay conservatory with a stone canted bay and end. Stone parapet pierced with cusped openings. 3-light windows with round heads; lantern light glazed roof. Stables: Steeply pitched plain tile roof with several gables.
Courtyard plan with clocktower on south-east and spirelet on ridge on north-west. Sash windows in stone surrounds. Large arched carriage entrance on north-east. INTERIOR: full height lounge/hall with balustraded gallery with coved soffit. Barrel roof with rooflights. Large fireplace with hood at north end. Doorways have segmental-arched heads. Stables interior not inspected. HISTORY: built at a cost of 27,500. (Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Berkshire: Harmondsworth: 1975-: 233).
