SCHEDULE SU 32 SW 2/42 SHERFIELD ENGLISH DANDY'S FORD LANE Birchwood Farmhouse
Farmhouse. Mid C18 altered C19 and C20. Painted brick in Sussex bond on stuccoed plinth. Peg tiled roof with C19 ridge tiles and end brick chimneystacks (right one stuccoed, left one renewed brickwork). 2 storeys 3 windows. Brick modillion eaves cornice. 3 casements with cambered head linings to 1st floor. Ground floor windows appear to have been enlarged as cambered linings do not stretch the full width; simple cambered surround to doorcase with modern door, now concealed by C20 conservatory. 1 S-shaped and 1 straight iron tie. C20 outshut to rear with tiled roof, 2 C20 dormers with casements and 2 casements to ground floor. Right side elevation stuccoed. Left side elevation has C20 casements. Interior has axial beams with 1 inch chamfers with run out stops. Wooden bressumer to open fireplace. Stair cupboard has plank door with H hinges. Cambered brick arch to right side room in former rear hall. Left side room has cambered brick chimney- piece. Staircase with stick balusters and 3 plank doors to 1st floor. Roof has angled queen struts with through purlins and pegged rafters strengthened by later rough poles. Shown on estate map of 1750 of the Duke of Northumberland's estate.
