GV II
School house. c1882. William White of Wimpole Street. Brick with plain tiled roofs. Domestic Gothic style, asymmetrically planned. 2 parallel ranges of 2 storeys, with a 3-storey 2-window range block to right of centre, parallel rear ranges and wings. Entrance in advanced rear range of 2-storey block, in lean-to porch carried on chamfered timber shafts. 2 full-height canted bay windows with wood mullioned and transomed lights, tile-hung aprons, and hipped roofs. Ground-floor canted bay window beyond, with 3-light mullioned and transomed window above beneath gable. Slightly advanced gable to right, with 3-light mullioned and transomed windows in each floor, and tile-hung gable apex. Front wall, axial and gable end stacks with star shaped shafts. Taller block to right a 2-window range with 3-light mullioned and transomed windows with shallow segmental heads, and half-hipped dormers over attic windows. 2-storeyed 3-window range beyond, with mullioned and transomed lower windows with segmentally-arched brick heads, and dormer windows above. End wall stacks with star-shaped shafts. A carefully articulated and early essay in the Domestic Revival Manner, both by one of the principal architects of the Victorian period and also significant as part of a good group of buildings commissioned by Shrewsbury School in the late C19.
