15/37 No. 61 (The Bell Inn) (formerly listed as 10.9.51 Bell Inn) GV II

House, now inn. Late C15, re-modelled late C18 with later additions and alterations. Rendered brick concealing and partly replacing timber frame, slate roof. 2 storeys; 4-window front, plate-glass sashes across first floor, late C20 casements to left and right on ground floor, latter to canted bay of late C19 shop or inn front, 4-panel and half- glazed doors with pilastered surrounds to right of centre (also within shop front); prominent rendered stack in front of ridge immediately to left of centre. Passageway to far left has massive plank and muntin outer door with pointed strap hinges; framing: exposed in left wall (square panels and long straight tension brace) and right wall of passage (close studding with middle rail); outer doorway has mortice holes for former vertical posts and singed head. Interior: richly moulded cross-beam ceiling in ground-floor room to right of stack, similar spine beam in left-hand room has heavy joists with ogee and straight-cut stops, also evidence for former jetty to front; partly infilled inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel. Left gable end is visible through window in right gable end of No. 59, Church Street (q.v.): square panels (several with wattle and daub and lathe and plaster infill) and cambered collar and tie beam with vertical struts.
