GV II

House with adjoining stable. c1848 with late C20 alterations. Brick on sandstone base, slate roof with end and rear stacks. Rectangular three-bay plan. Single storey and attic. Main east front articulated as 1:3:1 bays; central part breaks forward slightly and is gabled with moulded bargeboards on shaped brackets; outer bays have inserted sash windows in original open- ings; central part has a part-glazed door flanked by plain glass windows in original openings. Trefoil opening in stone triangle in gable apex. A C20 conservatory on a stone base adjoins the central gabled bay. Attic lights in gable ends. To rear right is a two-bay kitchen wing with a central chimney and adjoining its gable end is a single-bay stable with loft above. One of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford built'mainly on four-acre plots by the Chartist Land Company. As on other Chartist estates, each small-holding was intended to provide its occupant with an independent livelihood and the opportunity to qualify for a county vote. This building is unusual in that it has an attic storey and is notable for the survival of its rear service and out-buildings. (W Bond, From Hamlet to Parish, 1972).
