SEATON SLUICE NZ 37 NW 1395-/5/10001 HARTLEY SQUARE (South East side) Sewer Gas Lamp outside 21 Hartley Square II Sewer gas lamp standard. Late C19. Made by Webb Lamp Co Ltd of Birmingham. Cast iron. Moulded base, fluted shaft with swept foot, ladder rests, circular head with domed cover and finial. Plates with maker's name and "J E WEBBS PATENT SEWER GAS DESTRUCTOR" on base. Originally used methane from sewers, prior to introduction of coal gas.
