ELLERBY CRABTREE LANE TA 13 NE (south side, off) 6/17 Wood Hall - II House. 1820 with minor later additions and alterations. For the Maister family. Grey brick in Flemish bond with Welsh slate roof. Asymmetrical on plan. 2 storeys with 3-storey tower; 3 bays, that to right breaks forward and is pedimented, that recessed to left is a cylindrical tower with projecting single-storey porch set at an angle. Plinth. Entrance to porch, steps to double, part-glazed door with fanlight in moulded architrave under hoodmould. Cornice. Low parapet with blocking course. 12-pane sashes to ground and first floors, those to turret are curved, all have ashlar sills and flat arches of gauged brick, that to ground floor, right bay under hood with consoles. 3-course, second-floor band to tower, oculus to third floor over the porch. Overhanging eaves with paired modillions. Side stacks. Hipped roofs. Garden front has 3 first-floor openings: to right a large canted bay to full height. Tall, 12-pane sashes to ground floor under flat arches with fluted consoles supporting hoods, one to left and one to each side of the bay. 12-pane sashes to first floor under flat brick arches, all with ashlar sills. Outer sides of canted bay have blind windows.
Interior retains original features including marble fireplaces, 6-fielded- panel doors,some curved on section in moulded architraves, cornices, shutters, and open-well staircase with wrought-iron strapwork balustrade - with wreathed handrail. Dining room has 2-columnar Ionic colonnade. Family papers refer to a London architect. Pevsner N, Yorkshire, York and The East Riding, 1978, p 373.
