Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

VICTORIA PARADE TR 36 NE (south side) 1/415 Sun shelter and rock gardens, Winterstoke Gardens GV II Sunshelter and rock gardens. 1923. Sir John Burnet and Partners, Architects, Messrs. Pulham and Son, Craftsmen. Constructed with Pulhamite (applied to brick substructure). Lengths of rock garden extend to about 120 metres east and west of central sunshelter, with flights of steps about 65 metres east and west of central area. The rock face, about 2 metres high, recessed some 30 metres, and as if cut from the natural rock, the wall formed by sunshelter, a projecting curved quadrant with 12 paired Doric columns in antis with cornice on parapet, raised to centre and with iron balustrade and shield depicting man wrestling a ram. Flanking pavillions or pylons with blocked doors, with cornice and urns bearing fruit over, all on heavy moulded plinth, carried over back wall of arcade as seating with niches to right and to left, and central fountain bowl. Treble stepped platform to front and to right adjacent rock wall, bench recess, with original bench on 3 scrolled lion head supports. Upper ground level (sunshelter roof).

Central fountain pond in paved platform, with parapet wall to seaward formed by balcony of sunshelter, flanked by massive piers topped by squared font-like fish bowls. Landward parapet wall about 2 feet high, semi-circular, with bench seating and end piers. Plaques on the left and right flanks of the shelter record the Architects and Craftsmen. The gardens were originally the Wills Memorial Gardens, founded by Dame Janet Stancomb Wills in memory of her adoptive uncle, Sir Henry Wills (Lord Winterstoke) of nearby East Court, a member of the Tobacco family.
