MARCHAM NEW ROAD SU4596 (North side) 18/161 Denman College 09/02/66 (Formerly listed as Marcham House now Denman College)

GV II

Country house, now college. Late C18: remodelled c.l800 for George Elwes.

Limestone ashlar; hipped Welsh slate roof; ashlar ridge stacks. Double-depth plan. Late Georgian style. 2 storeys; 7-window range, of 2:3:2 fenestration with central projecting bays. Segmental pediment with consoles over glazed door with decorative overlight. Stone lintels over 6-pane sashes. String course and moulded cornice: parapet has oculus to left. Right side wall of 6-window range has 6-pane sashes: symmetrical outer bays have tripartite sashes, with pediments and Tuscan pilasters applied to lower windows. Rear: central 3 bays, similar to front, flanked by tripartite sashes each with Tuscan pilasters, plain entablature and moulded cornice. Interior: early C19 panelled doors, and marble fireplaces. Early C18 dog-leg staircase to left has S-shaped wrought-iron balustrade: this was taken from a house in London when Denman College (then Marcham House) was restored in 1938. Room to rear left: Graeco-Egyptian style plaster panels, with griffins flanking urns, above blocked door and 2 panelled doors which flank segmental-arched alcove with consoles: Egyptian-style fireplace and cornice. A drawing of 1806 shows that the central 3 bays were pedimented: the parapet was built across the front and the roof lowered soon afterwards. The same drawing shows the gatepiers (q.v.) with their pineapple finials.
