TA 30 SE NORTH COTES FLEETWAY

3/42 Church of St. Nicholas 9.9.67 II*

Parish church. C13, 1865 rebuilding by James Fowler of Louth in Early English Style. Squared limestone rubble, stone coped slate roofs, with decorative ridge tiles. Western tower, nave, aisles, chancel, south porch, north chapel. The 3 stage tower has plinth and chamfered offset to belfry with plain parapet, stepped clasping buttresses. On the south side a clock is set in a square surround and to belfry are C19 paired lancets with trefoil over in pointed surround. The top of the tower is octagonal. In the west wall is a C19 lancet and to middle stage a rectangular light. To north east angle of tower is a projecting stair block.

The north aisle west window is C19 of 2 lights, the head is a reused early C13 incised sepulchra lslab with sword and cross.

To the north wall are 3 pairs of C19 lancets. Beyond is a reset C14 doorway with continuous concave moulded surround. To the east wall of the aisle is a further pair of lancets. The chancel east window is of 3 lancets with trefoil heads. The south wall of chancel has a further pair of lancets with cinquefoil over.

The south aisle is lit by 4 pairs of lancets, 2 in the south wall and one to both east and west walls. The gabled south porch has a moulded outer doorway with hood and foliate stops. The inner doorway is early C13 with moulded head and hood, floriate label stops and angle shafts with annular capitals and bases.

Interior. The 3 bay nave arcades are early C13. The north arcade has quatrefoil round piers, square abaci and double chamfered arches. The south arcade has similar but keeled piers, keeled abaci and 4 centred double chamfered arches perhaps reset C15. The eastern respond is octagonal with human head corbel.

The tower arch is C13 with octagonal corbels with foliate terminals and a triple chamfered arch. The C13 chancel arch is double chamfered with annular human head corbels. In the south aisle is a C13 trefoil headed piscina. In the chancel on the north side is a C13 single chamfered doorway to vestry with C19 shouldered rear arch. There is a C19 tiled reredos. All fittings are C19 apart from the font, the upper parts of which are of late C12 enriched with thin intersecting arcades and crosses fleury which was curiously conjoined with a slightly battered and woodenly decorated base in C19. All windows have C19 stained glass.
