TR 25 NE STAPLE CRIXHALL

5/221 Crixhall Court 13.l0.52 GV II*

House. C16 and early C17. Timber framed and clad with red brick in English bond and plain tiled roof. Two storeys and garret on plinth with roof hipped to left, with shaped gable to right with projecting and moulded stack. Two glazing bar sashes with segmental heads on first floor, with Dering window to right and mullion and transomed window to left, tripartite glazing bar sash to centre left, Dering window to right, and half-glazed door to centre with moulded surround and cornice. Blocked window openings on right return with moulded labels. Projecting wing to left, 2 storeys on plinth with plat band, and hipped roof with gables, stepped down to lower end section, and stacks at end left and to right. Three wooden casements.

Rear elevations: originally the main entrance front. Two storeys on plinth with moulded plat band and cornice, with 2 storey porch with shaped gable, and moulded four-centred arched doorways with door of 9 ribbed panels. Irregular survival of hollow chamfered brick mullioned and transomed windows.

Interior: full framed partitions and ovolo moulded ceiling joists. Clasped purlin roof. Simple dog leg stair with turned principals and unturned balusters, and newel stair by entrance passage. Adams style fireplace removed from The Groves, mid C19 style house demolished 1843. Upstairs chamber with fine stone four-centred arched fireplace with beaded moulding. The house follows the 3 bay hall and screens-passage plan but seems never to have had an open hall. Adjacent to south is a medieval moated site.
