TOLLESBURY WEST STREET TL 9410-9510 (north side) 8/38 No. 24 GV II

House. Late C16 origin, altered in C17 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays aligned N-S, gable end to street, with axial stack in second bay from S end. Early C19 one-bay extension to north, with external stack at end. C19 brick extension along full length of W side, with catslide roof. One storey with attics. E elevation, 3 C20 casements and 2 more in gabled dormers. S elevation (to West Street), 3 C20 casements on ground floor, one on first floor, and C20 glazed door. The truss N of the axial stack has jowled posts and arched braces. to the cambered tiebeam, originally open. Elsewhere the posts are unjowled. Chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section. 2 wood-burning hearths back to back of 0.23 metre brickwork, with blocked aperture for bread overn to W; oven demolished. C19 tongued and grooved matchboarding on ceiling of one ground-floor room. Original rebated hardwood floorboards. Reported to have deeds from 1592.
