KNOWLE ST GILES CP KNOWLE LANE ST31SW Road bridge over River Isle 1/64 - - II

Road bridge over river. Probably C19. but possibly incorporating earlier fragments, Local stone rubble, ashlar dressinqs. Two segmental arches, one dry: stepped parapet with plain copjngs, some chamfered edges, some rounded edged, the parapets 'waisted' on plan, with serpentine corners to all but south-west corner, now straightened: cutwater on south side. Site of bridge probably old, but probably altered when the Chard canal opened in l42, forced the raisin: of this section of road. (VCH Somerset. Vol IV, 1978, Pl57).
