C17 or earlier timberframed house, remodelled c1730. Early-mid Cl9 extension on S and early C20 extension on N which joins with a late C18 former storehouse on extreme N. Main block is plastered and 3 storeys with 5 recessed sash windows in plain, raised surrounds. Early C19 door on left with glazed side lights and wide moulded cornice hood. Modillioned parapet. S block is red brick and 2 windows, 1 dummy; N extension in yellow brick with 3 sash windows. N range in red brick with machine tiled hipped roof, modillioned brick cornice and 4 shallow recesses. Rear elevation of centre block has full height S wing with moulded eaves cornice, floor bands and 4 recessed sash windows. Interior has c1730 fielded panel hall with barley twist baluster staircase. 1st floor N front room has early-mid C17 red brick fireplace with diamond cut arrises and stop-chamfered lintel. Home of Dr Edward Young, 1730 - 1765, poet, dramatist and rector of Welwyn.
