Includes: No.1B ST ALBAN STREET. House, with shop, on corner site, returning to 1B, St Alban Street. Late C18 or early C19. Painted brickwork, tiled mansard roofs. A principal frontage to St Alban Street has a broad return gable and continuous slightly lower mansard-roofed range in East Street. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attic and basement. The main front is in 2 windows, with early 6-pane sash raking dormers above a 12-pane to flush moulded box and an 8:12:8-pane bold canted oriel, with panelled skirt and flat base, to a moulded entablature. Ground floor has a 12-pane sash over a light at pavement level, and a shop front with modified bows to a central door on 4 concrete steps, under a transom and flat arched radial fanlight, in pilastered reveals, flanked by fluted pilasters; this overlays an earlier shop front, and the full-width dentiled cornice remains, cut off at the bows, carried on 5 narrow fluted Doric pilasters to very high pedestals, and a plinth. A stack to each gable. The return frontage has a plain gable, with a small basement light to brick voussoirs, then, immediately to the right is a 12-pane sash in flush moulded box, above a 6-panel door with deep square transom light, in deep reveals on 3 stone steps, and in a moulded architrave. No.5A, continuing right, has a 6-pane sash raking dormer above a 12-pane to moulded box, and a C19 shop front with fascia and consoles, with a central glazed door set back in deep returns. INTERIOR: not inspected. No.5A was listed on 8.3.73. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 350).
