TL 12 SE KINGS WALDEN PASTURE LANE (West side) Breachwood Green

4/36 Baileys Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. C16 gabled crosswing in middle, C17 E range, late C17 2-bays W range with contemporary 3-bays former stable extending to W. Timber frame roughcast with red brick casing to ground floor at front, and dark weatherboarded former stable at W. Rear of house tilehung with stucco to ground floor. Steep old red tile roofs. A long irregular 2-storeys house facing N with lower single-storey stable extending to W. The 2-bays crosswing, formerly jettied to N presumably had its open hall to E replaced by the present E range in the C17. Entrance is by a gabled porch beside crosswing on E into hall with a heated inner room at E end.

The floors are carried on cross-beams and axial joists. Beyond the large external chimney on the W side of the crosswing is a late C17 extension with an oven built into a wedge-shaped mass of brickwork at rear of its W bay presumably under a lean-to replaced by the present sun room. These domestic arrangements suggest that the crosswing was always a service wing but there is a cellar under the E range. 2- and 3-lights flush casement windows. Large external E gable chimney. Interior has heavy flat joists to floor of crosswing and trimming for stair next rear wall.

Upper floor has central partition, cambered tie-beams on curved braces, and curved windbraces to purlin in each slope of clasped-purlin roof. E range has swept jowled posts, straight braces to tie-beams, and clasped-purlin roof on collars. Ceiled under collars. W range has unjowled posts, straight braces and clasped-purlin roof.
