Pair of houses. c1835. Stucco with cornice and blocking course. 3 (formerly 2) storeys and basement, 3 bays each, the inner 2 bays of each house forming a slightly projecting central 4-bay section; 1-storey entrance extensions to each side. Casement windows in plain reveals, those to ground floor taller, each outer bay one flanked with a half Doric fluted column and pilaster; blind boxes to those in central section. Cast-iron balconies to ground and 1st-floor windows. Windows to (later) 2nd floor break through the cornice at sill level. Stucco band between ground and 1st floors. INTERIOR: not inspected. Nos 144-166 (even) (qqv) form a group.
