16.1.81 Nos 63 to 97 (odd) (Messrs Barkers' Store) GV II

Store. 1937-8. Bernard George. Portland stone, glass and gilded metal. Symmetrical convex facade. Seven storeys, upper 2 set back. Thirteen windows wide, with vertical stone piers running between, from first to fourth floors. Facade divided by 2 stone stair towers, with diagonally placed strip windows running vertically up the centres, and crowned by glass lanterns with folded glazing, flag poles and metal trim. Much relief sculpture, to stair towers, to stone piers by entrance, and to metal mullions and panels between windows. Cantilevered canopy to ground floor and bronze mullions to ground floor windows.

Original decoration to entrance hall and original escalator.
