Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

TQ 2881 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER CAVENDISH SQUARE W1 56/57 (north side)

10.9.54 Nos 11 and 14 including bridge

GV II*

An unusually grand Palladian treatment for a pair of town houses flanking the north axis of the square. C.1770. Each front symmetrical, in the style of John Vardy.

Ashlar Portland, slate roofs, 3 storeys, basement and mansard, 5 windows glazing bar sashes. Giant Corinthian order to upper floors, quoin pilaster and centre 3 bays advanced with engaged columns supporting pediment with sculpted palm leaves framing oculus. Vermiculated blocking to Doric columns of central doorway and similar vermiculated Gothic surrounds to flanking windows. Similar doorway to brick return.

Wrought iron area railings with scroll lamp standards and extinguishers. Ashlar bridge link set back has Madonna and Child by Jacob Epstein over arch. Good interiors with rich plasterwork, scrolled wrought iron work to staircase balustrades, marble fireplaces etc. The houses were speculatively built by a Mr Tufnell possibly with masonry prepared for the abortive Academy of the Society of Dilettanti intended for the site.

Georgian London: J Summerson. "The Society's House: An Architectural Study" J Summerson in Royal Society of Arts Journal October 1954.
