John Laing and Son Ltd had started opencast mining operations in 1942 to meet wartime needs. The work was expanded by the company after the war.
While the company register relating to this negative records the location to be 'Stubbs Wood' it is presumed that this is an image of the opencast coal mine at Stobswood in Northumberland.
This image was catalogued in 2013 as part of a pilot project funded by the John Laing Charitable Trust.
This is part of the Series: JLP01/08 John Laing Photographic Collection Black and White Negatives; within the Collection: JLP01 John Laing Photographic Collection
