Description

Construction of a new terminal building and piers, extensions to runways, and a new Maglev system at Birmingham Airport began in May 1981. The new terminal building was located on the opposite side of the site to the existing terminal at Elmdon. It was linked with Birmingham International railway station by the Birmingham Maglev, the first commercial Maglev system in the world. It used frictionless magnetic suspension to drive passenger cars along an elevated guideway. The Birmingham Maglev was opened in 1984. This photograph was published in the August 1984 edition of 'Team Spirit', the Laing employee newsletter.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
