The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Hospital at Pressed Steel Company, Oxford. A workman with a suspected fracture being examined in the X-Ray room of the hospital at the works of the Pressed Steel Company, Oxford.”
Health services did not always meet the needs of industry; specialist services, mostly voluntary and provided by the employer were established at some industrial sites, and industrial medical officers were often employed. The medical officer of a factory would carry out a medical examination of new employees and those returning to work after injury, to ensure that each were fit to work. They would also supervise the treatment of injuries and illnesses, previously provided by often untrained nurses. Industrial nursing additionally monitored the effect of the working environment on health, in order to develop preventative measures and medicines.
