The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple. Picture shows the roof-top sitting room outside the nurses’ home, a favourite after lunch venue, with its fine view over park and river.”
In 1938 it was decided that North Devon Infirmary was to be expanded: a new nurses’ home was opened in August 1940 by Countess Fortescue, and an additional ward was opened in 1941. The North Devon Infirmary Extension Fund was supported by donations to the hospital’s appeal for £15,000. See also MED01/01/1019-1027.
