Description

Number 30 Holford Square, in the centre of the image, was home to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin when he visited London in 1902-03. He used this address when applying for permission to study in the round Reading Room of the British Museum, then the main reading room of the British Library. The terrace was badly damaged by enemy bombing in 1941. Holford Square was demolished following the war and is now the site of Bevin Court.

The photographer, O.G.S. Crawford, has written an account on the reverse of the print noting the connection with Lenin.

Archival History

The print was received by the National Buildings Record on the 10/07/1944.

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-12 Red Box Project.
