Description

Gamage's was founded in 1878 by Arthur Walter Gamage. Its main premises was 116-128 Holborn. In 1928 a new store on Oxford Street began to be built, and this opened in 1930, but was unsuccessful and closed only eight months later. During the First World War the company manufactured the Leach Trench Catapult, used by the British Army on the Western Front. In 1968 a second store was opened in Romford, Essex. This store too was only open for a couple of years. The main premises in Holborn eventually closed in March 1972.

This photograph was taken for A Walter Piggot and Co Ltd, a firm of shopfitting specialists, who were presumably responsible for the fittings shown in the image.
