Description

Hexham Abbey, a former Augustinian Priory, was originally founded c673 by St Wilfrid. The choir, transepts and tower date to c1180, and the nave was rebuilt in 1908 by Temple Moor after a fire damaged it in 1296.THe abbey is partiall obscured in the image, but wome of the south transept, with high lancet windows, and south side of the nave can be seen, as well as the crosing tower, which has an embattled parapet and paired belfry openings in a blind arcade. In the foreground is the war memorial, constructed as a cross with a sword on the eastern side. It stands on an octagonal pedestal of Portland stone, which has the names of civilians and those lost fighting during both WWI and WII.
