The collection contains colour negatives and prints compiled by NMR Photographer Peter Williams during his survey of English seaside towns. The survey resulted in the publication of his book, 'The English Seaside' (Swindon: English Heritage, 2005).
The images in the collection show buildings, monuments, sculpture, structures and eccentric features in and around English seaside towns taken between 1993 and 2005. Building types include: lighthouses, piers, beach huts, hotels, cliff lifts, chalets, shelters, telephone kiosks, houses, bandstands, model villages, shops, cafes, fishing huts, and public conveniences (toilets). There are also views of seafront gardens, fun fair structures such as helter skelters and carousels, lidos, swimming pools and wartime defences.
There are 7999 colour 35mm strip negatives and they have the following negative number runs: 258A-258Z (excluding 258I and 258O); 259A-259H; and MF99/0622-MF99/0829 (excluding MF99/0637, 0709, 0704, 0737 and 0802). About half of the 258 and 259 run negatives and about three quarters of the MF99 runs are catalogued. There are an additional 2 transparencies and 56 negatives for which there is a handlist that have not been assigned negative numbers but have the sub-series reference EHC01/187/02.
There are 6971 colour prints produced from catalogued negatives. These prints are stored in binders or mounted on card and stored in folders. This sub-series has the reference EHC01/187/01. A handlist is available.
The series was transferred to the NMR in 2010.
