Description

The collection consists of a bound volume entitled ‘Smithson Drawings: 16th – 17th Centuries’, created as a reference tool by the Ministry of Works in 1949. It contains a hundred black and white photographic prints showing drawings by the architect Robert Smythson, amongst others. These drawings, held by the Royal Institute of British Architects, represent some of the first known architectural records in Britain, dating from 1599. A handlist is available.

Along with the prints is a copy of an introductory paper by John Alfred Gotch on ‘The development of house design in the reigns of Elizabeth and James, as illustrated by contemporary architectural drawings’.

The volume includes a preface by R. Randal Phillips, explaining the context of the volume. The photographs were taken as part of the Ministry of Works photographic series. The corresponding negatives with ‘Z’ references are listed as ‘missing’.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by The Historic England Archive in 2013.
