Description

The collection has c20,000 black and white negatives on 35mm and 120mm strip film, with 1885 35mm strip film negatives catalogued. They focus on architecture around England, especially on the north-west in County Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne. Most of the photography shows known buildings of architectural interest, such as high-profile manor houses like Seaton Delaval Hall and large churches and cathedrals, like Durham Cathedral and Ripon Minster/ Cathedral. The collection documents the changing architectural landscape in large towns, especially in Newcastle upon Tyne, where Clark has recorded buildings before their demolition, such as the Royal Arcade. Clark has also documented the changes in real time, with photographs that show the former Scotswood Bridge before its demolition in 1967, whilst the current bridge was constructed alongside it.

Clark also focussed on the modern architecture within towns, and the collection features records of Brutalist and Modern builds, such as Welbeck Street Car Park in London and a number of University buildings in Durham. Dunelm House (1966), a bespoke student union building, and Milburngate House, a government office begun in 1965 and demolished in 2016, are good examples of Brutalist structures in Durham.
