Description

An album of ecclesiastical photographs compiled by Colonel Ramsay Weston Phipps (1855 - 1923) of the Royal Artillery. Colonel Phipps took a great interest in architecture, visiting the cathedrals of England, and was himself a skilled architectural draughtsman.

The album contains 246 black and white high quality albumen photographic prints, the majority of English cathedrals and some major churches. There are also 21 photographs of foreign ecclesiastical sites in France and Italy and 2 further photographs of unidenfitified sites. Many of the photographs were taken by commercial photographic firms such as Francis Frith and W A Mansell.

29 of the photographs are loose prints, not attached to the album pages; these have been left between the pages in which they were found. There is a loose handwritten index to the album between the front cover and first page, which has been further annotated in pencil by Ian Leith (NMR Curation).

The album was catalogued in June 2006.
