Description

Fifty-three sheets relating to the recording, maintenance and presentation of West Kennet Long Barrow by English Heritage and its predecessor organisations, created between 1955 and 2010.

The group includes fourteen sheets created between May 1955 and May 1956 by archaeologist Stuart Piggott and the Ministry of Works, forming a record of the site prior to, during and after excavations in 1955-1956.

There are a number of sheets dating from 1956 to 1961 which relate to the re-presentation of the site for visits by the public; several sheets relate to the construction and installation of pavement lights over voids in the chambers and other sheets relate to redefinitions of boundaries and installation of fencing.

A number of sheets dating from 2007 and 2010 include detailed surveys of the site. A group of six sheets surveyed and plotted by English Heritage's Metric Survey Team in December 2007 includes three microtopographic plans of the ground levels within the burial chambers, and three sheets of measured sections through the monument.

A further ten sheets of topographic plans, measured plans and sections were created by the Mollenhauer Group Limited on behalf of English Heritage's Metric Survey Team in 2010, and are included with a reduced copy of a section location plan.
