A collection of 6 black and white negatives showing completed “Agricultural Cottages” in Southam. It is unclear whether this is in Southam, Warwickshire or Southam, Gloucestershire. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for postwar housing construction. The Temporary Housing Act of 1944/5 was intended to alleviate the acute housing shortages of the immediate postwar years. Very little information can be uncovered on the agricultural cottage and whether or not it was a type of housing widely introduced by the Ministry. The fact the housing was constructed from bricks suggested it was a traditional method of construction and therefore not widely adopted during the immediate postwar years.
2 of the 6 images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2019 project.
The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the images as belonging to the “Development Group” and the operator as being “E”.
This is part of the Sub Series: PSA01/04/H Housing; within the Series: PSA01/04 Negatives; within the Collection: PSA01 Property Services Agency
