Landscape Advice Note: Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Front cover for Landscape Advice Note: Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

By Alan Cathersides

The statutory purpose of AONBs is the conservation and enhancement of the area’s natural beauty, although many also fulfil a (non-statutory) recreational and cultural role. This objective should be taken into account by policies and development control decisions which affect AONBs and it should also be reflected by local authorities in their structure and local plans.

This Landscape Advice Note outlines the administration and management of these landscapes and how this relates to the management of historic sites.
