Understanding Place: Historic Area Assessments in a Planning and Development Context

This guidance document is to assist local authorities, practitioners, developers, community groups and others in assessing the character and significance of historic areas, be they city or town centres, suburbs, villages or other urban and rural landscapes. Historic Area Assessment (HAA) is an important and practical tool for the informed management of the historic environment.
