1/4 Barn at Manor Farm -

Aisled barn. C13, with C16 alterations and C19 replacements and recladding. Timber-framed; the aisles rebuilt and faced in rubble flint; thatched main span roof, slated aisles, which extend around the ends of the frame, with their outer walls divided into bays by plain red brick pilasters. A red brick diamond-shaped ventilation opening in all but the central bay, which contains the cart entrance. The interior, though much remodelled, contains substantial remains of C13 work. At least 8 main posts have 2 trenches for passing braces, although only one truss, to the left of the entry, seems to be in its original position. 4 tie-beams have 2 pairs of notched-lap housings for the ends of the passing braces, which did not extend above tie-beam level. There are stop-splayed scarfing joints in the arcade plates which have buckled badly. All the original main posts are rough and irregular in form. The roof over the main span is original, with housings for a collar to each pair of rafters, but was remodelled into a queen-post form in the C16. At the same time, most of the trusses were resited and on the west an end-aisle was added, possibly replacing an original bay. At the east end there may also have been shortening, and the aisle there is a C19 addition. prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the manor to which this barn was attached belonged to the Benedictine abbey of St. Edmundsbury.
