ASHBURY SU28NE 5/12 Odstone Farmhouse 10/11/52 (Formerly listed as Odstone Farmhouse and farmbuildings ) - II
Farmhouse. c.1700. Rendered front with limestone quoins and dressings, chalk and sarsen rubble to sides and rear; stone slate roof; brick stacks. Double pile plan. 2-storeys with cellar and attic, 5-window range. Central C20 7- panelled door has stone roll-moulded architrave; late C19 2-light sashes; moulded plinth, string at floor level, moulded cornice. Late C20 two-light casements at rear, also original 4-light window to 1st floor right. Door to side entry has moulded architrave and flat hood with curved brackets over mid C19 four-panelled door. Hipped roof, symmetrical end stacks and lateral stacks. Interior: original 2-panelled and ledged doors. Staircase in central passage gives access to cellar and side entry. Dog-leg stairs with landing; square newels, closed-string, turned balusters of identical moulding to those at Ashdown House c.1662. To rear is 1 storey back kitchen c.1700: Sarsen and chalk uncoursed rubble; chalk quoins; stone slate roof; one brick gable end stack; 1 door, one window range: Interior has slate flag floor and near complete washing and baking range, c.1700: from right to left is bakeoven, smoking box, salt box, segmental arch over fireplace with original swing bar, steps to washing copper lighted by gable dormer. C20 concrete block lean-to against east wall. The farm was part of the Craven Estate, thus accounting for the use of the same type of staircase as at Ashdown House.
